The colleague who antagonizes you on a daily basis probably
isn't going to change her ways, says Lillian Zarzar, the owner of MindSHIFTSM,
a Columbus, Ohio, consulting company that helps businesses improve their
employees' productivity. In a seminar called Dealing With The Difficult
People: How To Keep Your Cool, Zarzar suggest the following tips for staying
calm and collected in the workplace.
- Acknowledge - don't try to ignore - the emotions you're feeling.
- Realize that you have a right to express yourself; don't be afraid
to do so.
- Avoid making accusations. Focus on expressing your anger in a calm
manner using simple, direct statements.
- Count to 10.
- Accept responsibility if an argument erupts.
- If all else fails, walk away silently and return when you're calmer.
